The Stripe Add-On is the official way to take payments with Gravity Forms. It’s built and supported by the Gravity Forms team, and it’s the payment add-on I recommend most often. Here’s what it does well, where it falls short, and who it’s for.
What It Does
The add-on connects a form to your Stripe account. When someone submits the form, Stripe charges them and the payment details are saved on the entry. You set it up with a Stripe feed on each form, where you choose the transaction type and map the amount and billing fields.
- One-time payments: products, orders, donations and fees, charged when the form is submitted.
- Authorize now, capture later: useful for bookings and pre-orders.
- Subscriptions: recurring billing with custom intervals, free trials and setup fees.
- Payment methods: cards plus Apple Pay, Google Pay, Stripe Link, ACH debit and other regional methods through Stripe’s Payment Element.
- Customer portal: subscribers can update their card or cancel through Stripe’s customer portal.
- Refunds and cancellations from the entry in your WordPress dashboard.
- Live, Test and Sandbox modes for testing without real money.
The Pros
- Official and well supported. It’s maintained alongside Gravity Forms core, so updates keep pace with both Stripe and WordPress.
- Lots of payment methods with one setup. The Payment Element shows the methods you’ve turned on in Stripe, without extra plugins.
- Strong subscription support. Trials, setup fees and different intervals cover most membership and service businesses.
- Developer friendly. Plenty of filters let you change charge and subscription details, like starting a subscription on the 1st of the month.
The Cons
- Needs a Pro or Elite license. The Basic license doesn’t include it.
- Limited subscription controls in the feed. There are no built-in start dates or end dates for subscriptions. You need code or an add-on like STARTEND.
- No on-site subscriber dashboard. Customers manage subscriptions on Stripe’s portal. Add-ons like GravityStripe bring that onto your site.
- Stripe’s minimum charge of $0.50 USD applies, which trips people up when testing with small amounts.
Use Cases That Work
- Order forms and simple stores that don’t need a full cart
- Memberships and recurring services
- Event registrations and deposits
- Donations, including recurring donations
Pricing
| License | Price | Stripe Add-On |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | $59/year | Not included |
| Pro | $159/year | Included |
| Elite | $259/year | Included |
Stripe charges its own processing fees per transaction. Prices are current as I write this. Check the Gravity Forms pricing page before you buy.
Who Should Use It
- ✅ Anyone taking card payments through Gravity Forms
- ✅ Membership sites and subscription services
- ✅ Agencies building payment forms for clients
- ❌ Shops with a large catalog that need a cart, inventory and shipping rules (look at WooCommerce)
- ❌ Sites on a Basic license that don’t want to upgrade
The Verdict
If you take payments with Gravity Forms, this is the add-on to start with. It’s reliable, it supports the payment methods your customers expect, and its subscription features cover most needs. Add STARTEND or GravityStripe only if you need subscription dates or an on-site customer dashboard.
